Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE)

The Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE) is a national written examination designed
to assess applicants for midwifery registration to ensure that they meet entry-level competency
standards set out in the Canadian Competencies for Midwives. Its goal is to ensure that midwives
gaining registration are competent and safe practitioners providing a consistent standard of care
across Canada.

Through an amendment to the College of Midwives of Ontario’s Registration Regulation, the
successful completion of a qualifying examination is now a non-exemptible requirement for
registration as a midwife in Ontario. This means that - as of January 1, 2012 - anyone
making an application for registration with the College of Midwives of Ontario or with any of
the other provinces requiring the exam will need to pass the Canadian Midwifery
Registration Exam.

There are three confirmed dates for the CMRE in 2012: May 24, 2012, August 2, 2012 and October 11, 2012. The deadline for registration for the May sitting is March 26, 2012. The location of Ontario exam sites will be provided before the registration deadline. The exam registration fee is $750. Anyone who believes that they will be eligible to write the exam and who wishes to make an
application for registration on or after January 1, 2012 should review this information in order to
ensure that they complete the required registration steps before the deadline.
More information - including the registration form - will be added to the CMRC and CMO
websites as it becomes available.
