How your complaint is handled

The Registrar will refer your complaint to the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee (ICRC) of the College. This Committee is comprised of registered midwives and public members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

The ICRC may ask you for more information, and may ask that an investigator be appointed to conduct further inquiries.

An ICRC Panel reviews the case once all the relevant materials have been collected. The midwife and the complainant are not present. At the conclusion of the review of your complaint, the Panel may:

  1. require the midwife to appear before the Panel to be cautioned about her conduct;
  2. refer the matter to the Discipline Committee of the College to hold a formal hearing, providing there is sufficient information to support allegations of professional misconduct or incompetence;

  3. take other appropriate action permitted by the legislation, such as an agreement signed by the midwife that includes remedial action or further education; or

  4. take no further action on the matter.
