How the College Functions The affairs of the College are directed by policy established by the Council of the College. To ensure the profession's accountability and responsiveness, the Council acts as a board of directors, comprised of 49% public membership and 51% professional to ensure the profession's accountability and responsiveness.
All public Council members are appointed by the Ontario provincial government through an Order-in-Council, selected through the Public Appointments Unit of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Professional members of Council are elected from the College's membership of registered midwives. Elections are held annually in June. The Council oversees College activities, ensuring the development of policies and standards. A good deal of Council's work is done through committees. Committees required by legislation include Executive, Registration, Quality Assurance, Client Relations, Complaints, Discipline and Fitness to Practice.
