The College periodically receives reports that individuals who are not midwives may be offering midwifery services or advertising themselves as persons who are qualified to practise midwifery in Ontario. According to the Midwifery Act only registered midwives can use the title “Midwife” or any variation of that title. In addition, people who are not registered midwives cannot hold themselves out as midwives. This prevents people from pretending that they are midwives when they are not.
The only exception is an aboriginal person who provides traditional midwifery services. They may use the title “aboriginal midwife” or a variation, abbreviation or an equivalent in another language and may hold themselves out as a person who is qualified to practise in Ontario as an aboriginal midwife.
The following individuals have come to the College’s attention as using the title of “Midwife” and/or holding themselves out as midwives. They have been sent cease and desist letters:
Louisa Brubacher (2010)
Susan Colombia-Rains (2003)
Stephanie Gardner (2003)
Lena Sherk (2002)
Stephanie Wilbur (1999)
The College encourages members to use the College’s public register to verify membership status. If you are aware of or have reasonable grounds to suspect a person is illegally practising or unlawfully holding themselves out as a midwife, please contact the College.
