Becoming RegisteredNEW Transitional Certificate of Registration with the College of Midwives of Ontario (pdf version) The Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE) is a national written examination designed to assess applicants for midwifery registration to ensure that they meet entry-level competency standards set out in the Canadian Competencies for Midwives. Its goal is to ensure that midwives gaining registration are competent and safe practitioners providing a consistent standard of care across Canada. Through an amendment to the College of Midwives of Ontario’s Registration Regulation, the successful completion of a qualifying examination is now a non-exemptible requirement for registration as a midwife in Ontario. This means that - as of January 1, 2012 - anyone making application for registration with the College of Midwives of Ontario or with any of the other provinces where midwifery is regulated will need to pass the Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam. For further information regarding the CMRE, please see www.cmo.on.ca/cmre.php. CMRE examination score reports will be mailed to candidates within 4-6 weeks of sitting the exam. Anyone who is able to meet all of the requirements for registration with the College of Midwives of Ontario, but who has not received the results of the examination, will be eligible for a Transitional Certificate of Registration. This certificate will allow individuals who are awaiting the results of the exam to practise midwifery while under the supervision of a member who holds a general certificate of registration. Transitional certificates are valid for up to 90 days and will be revoked when the candidate is notified that she has passed the exam and receives a General or Supervised Certificate of Registration or when she is notified that she has failed the exam. In the event that a candidate fails the exam, she will have to wait until the next exam offering to rewrite it and will not be eligible to practice midwifery until she does so. To apply for a Transitional Certificate of Registration, please complete and submit a Registration Application to the College of Midwives of Ontario.
